The aim of the PARALEL LIVES project is to continue the dialogue between the community of people with mental illness, the professional and lay public. PARALEL LIVES will point out that the problem of social exclusion of this group of citizens is a problem for all of us.
Motto: Psychological problems and illnesses sometimes plague almost a third of the Czech population.
This is clear from studies, the results of which were presented to journalists in Brno on Thursday 13.10.2011 by people from the management of the Czech Psychiatric Society (ČPS). According to them, it is estimated that three million Czech residents have some kind of mental disorder. About half a million of them go to the psychiatric emergency room.
The aim of the project is to improve the quality of life of people with chronic mental illness in the Czech Republic through the introduction of systemic tools facilitating their integration into working and social life.
PARALEL LIVES have four separate but closely interlinked sections:
1. mapping of the situation of OSDO abroad (EU) and the Czech Republic
2. creation of documentary film
3rd cycle of professional lectures with projection for employers with possibility of discussion
4. cultural accompanying programme (dance, theatre and musical performances )
The creation of a thematic network to share experiences with local actors and foreign partners is essential for the successful implementation of the project. The project will produce a documentary film “Parallel Lives“, which will be filmed both in the Czech Republic and by foreign partners in England, Italy and Sweden.
The document will address the employment of people with chronic mental illness (myths and prejudices of people with mental illness and their labour market application) and will be distributed to employment offices and other actors in the local labour market.
A necessary part of the project are seminars and workshops, discussions on the document with employers, labour offices and other local labour market actors as well as an awareness and education campaign in the media (public media).
Both mapping and discussions will suggest a strategy for change, namely:
• the current trend and dynamics of the state of social exclusion sites • principles of the policy of change
• Barriers to the policy of change
• the policy making process for change
The project supports the development of positive self-conception among the target group of people with chronic mental illness, strengthens their social integration opportunities, improves their position on the local labour market, increases their chances of returning to the labour market on the ground.

Final Conference 13.11.2014
The final international conference, held on 3.12.2013 at Nostic Palace, was truly amazing. Information obtained from foreign experts in Italy, Great Britain and Sweden are certainly of great benefit to the difficult upcoming period of reform of psychiatric care in the Czech Republic and also to the employment of people with mental illness. Thanks to the fact that they were already undergoing psychiatric care reform in these European countries in the 1970s, we can draw on their experience
